NJP Executive Director Jay Hedden was invited to give the keynote address at the 2009 Annual Meeting of Gateway Northwest Maternal and Child Health Consortium and the Quarterly Meeting of Essex Metro Immunization Coalition on March 23^rd 2009.  Gateway is one of several consortiums in the state that seek to improve non-hospital based provider services particularly for children, and become advocates for mothers and children through political and other avenues of influence.  These groups also seek to maximize resources to enable implementation of new or expanded services for pregnant women and children.

Over 75 Physicians, Nurses and Health Care Professionals and Administrators attended the event.  Mr. Hedden discussed the approaching proliferation of electronic health records in medical practices and hospitals across New Jersey and the nation.  He emphasized the impact on Obstetric and Pediatric offices.  Mr. Hedden also outlined the avenues available to private medical practices to reduce the cost of obtaining a certified Electronic Health Record.  He further described the federal dollars that will be made available through the HITECH Act as part of President Obama’s Stimulus package that was passed in February.  Physicians participating in Medicare are eligible for up to $44,000.00 in funds if they are using a certified EHR by January 1, 2011.  Physicians who have over 30% Medicaid in their practice are eligible for up to $64,000.00 in funds.  Pediatricians who have 20% Medicaid are also eligible for up to $64,000.00.
